President Mahama Orders Audit of $245M All-African Games Funds
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a comprehensive forensic audit into the $245 million expenditure related to Ghana’s hosting of the 13th All-African Games, which took place from March 4 to March 23, 2024. The directive, issued on November 4, 2025, follows a detailed report submitted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and is aimed at ensuring full transparency and accountability in the financial management of the international event.
Growing public and parliamentary concerns over the substantial budget allocated for the Games prompted the presidential intervention. The Auditor-General has been tasked with conducting the thorough investigation and is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the President by the second week of December 2025. The audit will meticulously examine all financial and operational aspects of the Games, including procurement and contracting processes, financial management, expenditure controls, and the delivery and value-for-money of infrastructure projects.
Of the total expenditure, approximately $195 million was reportedly directed towards infrastructure development and the upgrading of sports facilities. Operational costs, including transportation, logistics, and event management, accounted for around $48 million, with athlete feeding consuming an additional $15 million. Specific areas of concern highlighted include the $34 million spent on completing just 30% of the University of Ghana stadium and the reported $145 million allocated for the Borteyman Sports Complex.
President Mahama has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability in public spending. He emphasized that this “war against corruption continues unabated,” and that all government agencies and committees involved in the planning and execution of the Games will also be scrutinised to ensure adherence to financial regulations and ethical practices.
