Semenyo Is the Face of Ghana Football -Asamoah Gyan’s Bold World Cup Prediction
Gyan Crowns Semenyo as Ghana’s New King
Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has made a bold declaration ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — Antoine Semenyo is now the face of Ghana football. Speaking at PUMA’s Rolling Nations kit launch event in New York, Gyan left no room for doubt about who he believes will carry the Black Stars’ hopes in North America this summer.
“Antoine Semenyo is the face of Ghana Football now,” Gyan told Sky Sports. “There will be a lot of pressure on him going to the World Cup — but I believe in him.”
A Season to Remember
It is hard to argue with Gyan’s assessment. Semenyo had a stunning 2025/26 Premier League season with Manchester City, scoring 17 league goals, winning the Carabao Cup and the Emirates FA Cup, and earning a nomination for the PL Player of the Season award. For a Ghanaian to be mentioned in the same breath as the world’s best is a moment of national pride.
Yet Gyan was also candid about the pressure that comes with playing for one of football’s elite clubs. “When you’re playing for one of the best teams in the world and you come to the national team, there will be a lot of expectations,” he said. “People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team — but I have to put myself in his shoes.”
Caleb Yirenkyi — The Next Star?
Gyan also shone a spotlight on young midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who earned widespread praise after scoring in the Black Stars’ friendly draw against Wales on June 2 in Cardiff. The 21-year-old is being tipped as one of Ghana’s most exciting prospects, and his composed performance against Wales added to the growing excitement around his World Cup debut.
Ghana’s World Cup Mission
The Black Stars are drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia — arguably one of the toughest groups for an African side. Ghana’s fixtures:
- June 17 — Ghana vs Panama, BMO Field, Toronto
- June 23 — Ghana vs England, Gillette Stadium, Boston
- June 27 — Ghana vs Croatia, Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
Ghana are targeting their first knockout stage appearance since their famous 2010 run — when Gyan himself nearly sent them to the semi-finals with a penalty that will live in football memory forever. This generation has a chance to finish what he started.
The Nation Believes
With Semenyo in electric form, Thomas Partey as the experienced anchor, and a squad full of hungry young talent, the mood in Ghana ahead of the World Cup is one of cautious but genuine excitement. Gyan summed it up perfectly: “We have the tools. We have young players coming up. We will give our full support.”
Black Stars, the whole of Ghana is behind you. Go and make us proud. 🌟⚽🇬🇭
